Covid-19: Necessary Preparations Before Entering Japan

For foreign nationals who are planning to enter Japan by following the guidelines of the Residence Track framework, there are certain procedures that need to be followed. In this article you can learn what preparations are necessary before entering Japan.

If you do not follow these procedures or prepare the necessary documents and install the required apps, you will be refused entry into Japan.

What to Prepare Before Entering Japan

Upon arrival at the airport, the quarantine and the immigration officers will check whether or not you have installed and set-up necessary applications (LINE, COVID-19 contact tracing, and Google Map).

There are also required documents that you need to prepare before your departure.

[Documents to be submitted]

1) Eligible Visa or the “Letter of Confirmation of Submitting Required Documentation for Re-entry into Japan”

2) Certificate of pre-entry PCR test results (original or copy) (issued within 72 hours before departure (Note: departure time of the flight))

3) “Written Pledge (Foreign nationals - Residence track) (PDF)” (updated on September 17) 2 copies

4) “Questionnaire” (distributed to all the passengers on the plane)

[Procedures to be followed]

1) 14-day health monitoring prior to departure

2) Take out private medical insurance (including travel insurance covering medical expenses during one’s period of stay in Japan) before entry into Japan

3) 14-day health follow-up after entering Japan using LINE

4) Install the COVID-19 contact tracing application (COCOA)

5) Retain location data for 14 days after entering Japan via the map application (PDF)
